April 5 Daily Discovery - Read Amos Chapter 2

This passage below is from the King James Version (ekjv.org).

Remarks from the Berean Fellowship follow the passage below.

[1] Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Moab, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime:
[2] But I will send a fire upon Moab, and it shall devour the palaces of Kerioth: and Moab shall die with tumult, with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet:
[3] And I will cut off the judge from the midst thereof, and will slay all the princes thereof with him, saith the LORD.
[4] Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have despised the law of the LORD, and have not kept his commandments, and their lies caused them to err, after the which their fathers have walked:
[5] But I will send a fire upon Judah, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem.
[6] Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of shoes;
[7] That pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and turn aside the way of the meek: and a man and his father will go in unto the same maid, to profane my holy name:
[8] And they lay themselves down upon clothes laid to pledge by every altar, and they drink the wine of the condemned in the house of their god.
[9] Yet destroyed I the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks; yet I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath.
[10] Also I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and led you forty years through the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite.
[11] And I raised up of your sons for prophets, and of your young men for Nazarites. Is it not even thus, O ye children of Israel? saith the LORD.
[12] But ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink; and commanded the prophets, saying, Prophesy not.
[13] Behold, I am pressed under you, as a cart is pressed that is full of sheaves.
[14] Therefore the flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not strengthen his force, neither shall the mighty deliver himself:
[15] Neither shall he stand that handleth the bow; and he that is swift of foot shall not deliver himself: neither shall he that rideth the horse deliver himself.
[16] And he that is courageous among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day, saith the LORD.

That's the Last Straw!

Popeye would say, "That's all I can stands and I can't stands no more!" That's another way of saying that's the last straw. The idiom means, "I won't take anymore, or I've been pushed as far as I can be pushed." A similar caution would be, "Don't press your luck."

God says to israel, "Behold, I am pressed under you, as a cart is pressed that is full of sheaves."

Amos begins with a warning against Moab, continues to Judah and then proceeds to Israel. He counts their transgressions as being for three and then four. It is the same idiom. You've gone too far, that's the last straw. J udgment is coming.

Children Do this with Their Parents

The hearts of children have a natural bent to mischief. A good parent will make sure that the children understand rules and the consequences of them being broken. Woe be to the children that continually break their parents rules without being disciplined for it. If you are a parent and you fail to discipline your children for disobedience, you are not loving them as you should. When you discipline your children you are preparing them for life. If you follow the Biblical mandates for correction and instruction, your children will end up learning to control themselves so they don't have to be controlled by an authority.

You are going to have your children for a few years normally they're going to get done with their schooling and then they have to move on to some level of independence away from their parents. They will either be getting a job, enrolling and higher education, or joining the military. They cannot succeed in any of those if they lack self-discipline. Most of this discipline training happens when our children are younger.

Don't allow your children to press you to a place of anger. When you have to discipline your children you should NEVER do it while you are angry. Proper child discipline is never child abuse. You discipline your children when they have on purpose broken a rule. Breaking the rule brings discipline... Every time. And with that discipline comes instruction on how to avoid it in the future and love and reassurance before it is done.

Psa. 38:1

O LORD, rebuke me not in thy wrath: neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.

Prov. 13:24

He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

Betimes means early, promptly, or frequently. Don't let the transgressions pile up until you are pressed by them.

Heb. 12:5-11

[5] And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:
[6] For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
[7] If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
[8] But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.
[9] Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?
[10] For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.
[11] Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

There is a Limit to God 's Patience

Don't allow your transgressions to go unconfessed to the Lord, either.

1 John 1:6-10

[6] If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
[7] But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
[8] If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
[9] If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
[10] If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
