November 3 Daily Discovery - Read Song of Solomon Chapter 6
This passage below is from the King James Version (ekjv.org).
Remarks from the Berean Fellowship follow the passage below.
[1] Whither is thy beloved gone, O thou fairest among women? whither is thy beloved turned aside? that we may seek him with thee.
[2] My beloved is gone down into his garden, to the beds of spices, to feed in the gardens, and to gather lilies.
[3] I am my beloved's, and my beloved is mine: he feedeth among the lilies.
[4] Thou art beautiful, O my love, as Tirzah, comely as Jerusalem, terrible as an army with banners.
[5] Turn away thine eyes from me, for they have overcome me: thy hair is as a flock of goats that appear from Gilead.
[6] Thy teeth are as a flock of sheep which go up from the washing, whereof every one beareth twins, and there is not one barren among them.
[7] As a piece of a pomegranate are thy temples within thy locks.
[8] There are threescore queens, and fourscore concubines, and virgins without number.
[9] My dove, my undefiled is but one; she is the only one of her mother, she is the choice one of her that bare her. The daughters saw her, and blessed her; yea, the queens and the concubines, and they praised her.
[10] Who is she that looketh forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners?
[11] I went down into the garden of nuts to see the fruits of the valley, and to see whether the vine flourished, and the pomegranates budded.
[12] Or ever I was aware, my soul made me like the chariots of Amminadib.
[13] Return, return, O Shulamite; return, return, that we may look upon thee. What will ye see in the Shulamite? As it were the company of two armies.
A Special Love Between a Husband and a Wife
Solomon collected a total of 1, 000 wives and concubines during the course of his reign. Many of his wives and concubines were gifts of from foreign lands, thus used as a political partnership and them yielding to Solomon's control over their lands. Did he love them all?
I don't think so. But you don't have to love someone in order to have an intimate connection with them. God specifically commanded the kings not to do what Solomon did.
They were simply property and security between his kingdom other kingdoms roundabout them. However, we know that he did love one very specially. She is the object of his love that is recorded in this book, and she loved him back. The book describes how desperately they were in love with one another.
1 Kings 11:1-3
[1] But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites;
[2] Of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love.
[3] And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart.
God's Design for Marriage
God's design for marriage was this: one man and one woman for as long as they both shall live. God did not cut one of Adam's ribs into four pieces and make him four wives, much less a thousand!
God did not make Adam and Steve either. The only marriage that God recognizes is a marriage between one man and one woman.
The links to which man has gone during this little season of deception seems to have no end. There is only two genders which are defined by the physical sexuality of a human being. The natural result of a marriage is offspring which is god's design. The natural sex drive of man is by god's design as well, but it surely has become perverted.
God made Adam from the dirt and he made Eve from Adam and when a man and a woman come together sexually, they become one. This is why we read when God had created man and woman he called their name Adam. Adam named Eve, not God. God called man's name Adam and he called the man and the woman's name Adam as well. This adds relevance to the words of Jesus when He says, "What God has joined together -- don't let men take them apart."
Men can continually try to find excuses for his sin. God may sometimes temporarily overlook a transgression but he never excuses it. Jesus Christ the Son of God gave his life because God's holiness would not allow Him to overlook man's sin.
Gen. 1:26-28
[26] And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
[27] So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
[28] And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
Matt. 19:3-6
[3] The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?
[4] And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
[5] And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
[6] Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
God's Winks and Commands
Acts 17:26-30
[26] And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;
[27] That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:
[28] For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
[29] Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.
[30] And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:
God is full of mercy and patience. Just because He does not judge a sin immediately does not mean that he accepts it. God can sovereignly and temporarily overlook a transgression. We see this frequently under the Old Covenant but now in the New Covenant age we no longer have such ignorance and we are commanded to repent.
Their Marriage as an Allegory
The two main characters of this poetic book are the husband Solomon and the Shulamite bride. It is broadly believed and accepted that the story serves as an allegory between how Jesus Christ loves His bride -- the church, and how His bride -- the church loves Him back. We love Him because He first loved us! We long to be with Him. O ur hearts ache when we are parted from Him.
Eph. 5:25-33
[25] Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
[26] That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
[27] That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
[28] So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
[29] For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:
[30] For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
[31] For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
[32] This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
[33] Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
1 John 4:15-19
[15] Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.
[16] And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
[17] Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
[18] There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
[19] We love him, because he first loved us.
