A Final Charge for a Beloved Son

Paul knew that he was near the end of his life and he had a final word that he wanted to get to his own son in the faith. He wanted to remind Timothyof the things that were most important for him as a minister of the gospel.

Preach the Word

At the top of the list: preach the word! Proclaim the Truth.

Some will not like it, some will turn away from it, but that doesn't matter -- keep preaching the word! people may find it comfortable and entertaining and pleasant to hear stories or fables while at the same time the truth will make them uncomfortable. We must be aware of this and teach with authority and with patience and love regardless.

Spread the Word

We know that the apostle loved Timothy deeply and appreciated him greatly. This young assistant to the apostle was often left with churches that Paul had established to continue to teach and to strengthen them. Timothy was not only a follower of Jesus Christ he was also a disciple of the Apostle Paul. He had learned from Paul by being with him in his travels and Paul also encourages Timothy to do the work of an evangelist. The message of the evangelist is the gospel and the work is taking the gospel to new places. A pastor or an elder or a bishop would typically minister to a single congregation. An evangelist would be establishing new congregations. They are most often referred to as missionaries today or church planting missionaries but in the New Testament they are called evangelists.

Ready to See the Judge!

Paul knew he did not have much time left on the earth. He does not say that God told him this nevertheless, he knew. His hope of being caught up without dying was not what he was clinging to. H e knew that his life would continue when his earthly life ended he knew that to be absent from his body meant he would be present with the Lord and he knew that he would be facing judgment for the things that he had done in his body since he was saved and he was looking forward to meeting his Lord and Savior, the Great Judge.

2 Cor. 5:6-10

[6] Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:
[7] (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
[8] We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
[9] Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him.
[10] For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

Are you ready to face The Judge?

[1] I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;
[2] Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
[3] For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
[4] And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
[5] But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.
[6] For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.
[7] I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
[8] Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
[9] Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me:
[10] For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia.
[11] Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry.
[12] And Tychicus have I sent to Ephesus.
[13] The cloke that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments.
[14] Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works:
[15] Of whom be thou ware also; for he hath greatly withstood our words.
[16] At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me: I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge.
[17] Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.
[18] And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
[19] Salute Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus.
[20] Erastus abode at Corinth: but Trophimus have I left at Miletum sick.
[21] Do thy diligence to come before winter. Eubulus greeteth thee, and Pudens, and Linus, and Claudia, and all the brethren.
[22] The Lord Jesus Christ be with thy spirit. Grace be with you. Amen.
