October 17 Daily Discovery - Read Numbers Chapter 6

This passage below is from the King James Version (ekjv.org).

Remarks from the Berean Fellowship follow the passage below.

[1] And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
[2] Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When either man or woman shall separate themselves to vow a vow of a Nazarite, to separate themselves unto the LORD:
[3] He shall separate himself from wine and strong drink, and shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink, neither shall he drink any liquor of grapes, nor eat moist grapes, or dried.
[4] All the days of his separation shall he eat nothing that is made of the vine tree, from the kernels even to the husk.
[5] All the days of the vow of his separation there shall no rasor come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in the which he separateth himself unto the LORD, he shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow.
[6] All the days that he separateth himself unto the LORD he shall come at no dead body.
[7] He shall not make himself unclean for his father, or for his mother, for his brother, or for his sister, when they die: because the consecration of his God is upon his head.
[8] All the days of his separation he is holy unto the LORD.
[9] And if any man die very suddenly by him, and he hath defiled the head of his consecration; then he shall shave his head in the day of his cleansing, on the seventh day shall he shave it.
[10] And on the eighth day he shall bring two turtles, or two young pigeons, to the priest, to the door of the tabernacle of the congregation:
[11] And the priest shall offer the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering, and make an atonement for him, for that he sinned by the dead, and shall hallow his head that same day.
[12] And he shall consecrate unto the LORD the days of his separation, and shall bring a lamb of the first year for a trespass offering: but the days that were before shall be lost, because his separation was defiled.
[13] And this is the law of the Nazarite, when the days of his separation are fulfilled: he shall be brought unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation:
[14] And he shall offer his offering unto the LORD, one he lamb of the first year without blemish for a burnt offering, and one ewe lamb of the first year without blemish for a sin offering, and one ram without blemish for peace offerings,
[15] And a basket of unleavened bread, cakes of fine flour mingled with oil, and wafers of unleavened bread anointed with oil, and their meat offering, and their drink offerings.
[16] And the priest shall bring them before the LORD, and shall offer his sin offering, and his burnt offering:
[17] And he shall offer the ram for a sacrifice of peace offerings unto the LORD, with the basket of unleavened bread: the priest shall offer also his meat offering, and his drink offering.
[18] And the Nazarite shall shave the head of his separation at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and shall take the hair of the head of his separation, and put it in the fire which is under the sacrifice of the peace offerings.
[19] And the priest shall take the sodden shoulder of the ram, and one unleavened cake out of the basket, and one unleavened wafer, and shall put them upon the hands of the Nazarite, after the hair of his separation is shaven:
[20] And the priest shall wave them for a wave offering before the LORD: this is holy for the priest, with the wave breast and heave shoulder: and after that the Nazarite may drink wine.
[21] This is the law of the Nazarite who hath vowed, and of his offering unto the LORD for his separation, beside that that his hand shall get: according to the vow which he vowed, so he must do after the law of his separation.
[22] And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
[23] Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them,
[24] The LORD bless thee, and keep thee:
[25] The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:
[26] The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.
[27] And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them.

A Blessing for God's People

At the assembly that I attend, our pastor pronounces this blessing upon the people at the end of most Sunday morning services, if not always. I always love hearing this blessing and open my heart to receive it. Pronouncements of blessing can be spoken over anyone or any group of people at any time. Such pronouncements of blessing are prayers for blessing at the same time. I believe that there is real power in such pronunciations in the name of God or our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

The majority of this chapter covers the law of the nazarite vow. This instruction for blessing God's people follows it.

The LORD ...

Bless You

Deut. 28:1-6

[1] And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth:
[2] And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God.
[3] Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field.
[4] Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy ground, and the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep.
[5] Blessed shall be thy basket and thy store.
[6] Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out.

We can pronounce blessings upon a person or upon a group and it may not always be able to be received or applied, but that is not up to us. The Lord Himself is the blesser, and it will be His Sovereign decision to apply it to any or all persons hearing it. It is not "white magic" to say such words.  We cannot force the hand of God and if we attempt to do so, we are foolish.

Jesus taught us to even bless our persecutors and not curse them. We should have a heart that wants to pray for god to bless our enemies. We want everyone to be blessed by God.

Keep You

To keep means to protect to watch over or preserve. Psalm 121 is a great keeping song.

Psa. 121

[1] I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
[2] My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.
[3] He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.
[4] Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.
[5] The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand.
[6] The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.
[7] The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.
[8] The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

Make His Face Shine Upon You

We don't talk much today about having our faces shine, but we use something very close when we say that someone's face lit up. A shining face is a face that is looking with pleasure and love upon the object of its affection.

Psa. 42:5

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.

Be Gracious To You

The Hebrew word for gracious is chanun.  It denotes a disposition of generous, compassionate favor. It is never used of casual kindness; it speaks of heartfelt, covenant-loyal mercy that moves toward the needy and undeserving. Unlike abstract philosophical notions of benevolence, חַנּוּן always functions within concrete relationships, foremost between the Lord and His people, and secondarily among His people toward one another.

Lift His Countenance Upon You

May God watch over your situation and help you according to your need. May He look upon you with merciful understanding and kindness.

Give You Peace

I can think of no other condition that a human being could appreciate more than that of peace. We can have peace with God and the peace of God regardless of the troubled world that we live in or troubles that are near us.

Isa. 26:1-4

[1] In that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah; We have a strong city; salvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks.
[2] Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation which keepeth the truth may enter in.
[3] Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
[4] Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:
