Read 2 Samuel Chapter 6
And it was told king David, saying, The Lord hath blessed the house of Obededom, and all that pertaineth unto him, because of the ark of God. So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obededom into the city of David with gladness.
And it was so, that when they that bare the ark of the Lord had gone six paces, he sacrificed oxen and fatlings.
And David danced before the Lord with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod.
~ 2 Samuel 6:12-14
The Dancing King
A very popular Swedish pop group named ABBA recorded a big hit in 1976 titled "Dancing Queen". I really enjoyed this group, loved their sound and harmonies when I was in high school.
When I was reading this passage in 2 Samuel where we learn that David's wife, Michal, criticized David for his public joy he expressed as the ark of the covenant was coming home to Jerusalem.
What Kind of Dance?
It wasn't any special form. Not a square dance, not the boogie woogie, not the locomotive, just think of any dance and that wasn't it, either.
Dancing in Church?
I don't observe dancing routinely in the church assemblies that I attend. However, I can tell you who WILL be dancing - the children!
The younger they are the more likely they are to dance.
Why? Because they don't care what people think.
The hear the happy music and probably only understand a few words but that doesn't matter. Their little, mostly innocent hearts are filled with joy so they've gotta' dance!
What Attended David's Dancing
Well, we know there were trumpets, so their was some music. There was a lot of excitement because the people were SHOUTING.
And David was dancing with all his might and he was leaping. He was jumping up and down and twirling about.
Unsophisticated Jubilation
Michal watched David dancing and despised Him. She sarcastically sassed him saying, "How glorious was the King of Israel today!" She should have joined in the dancing instead.
David was dancing before the Lord like a child that was completely unaware of those that were about him. He wasn't dancing for them, he was dancing before God.
It seems like if we are able to "let it all hang out" when we are cheering for our favorite team. It seems like most people can shout when it comes to cheering on their team.
What is wrong with us?
Why is it we can never get excited and become jubilant over having our sins forgiven, God living within our hearts, and contemplating God's blessings upon us?
The main reason we gather together with other believers is to offer worship to God.
God help us to have this focus, please.
