October 7 Daily Discovery - Read 1 Thessalonians Chapter 5
This passage below is from the King James Version (ekjv.org).
Remarks from the Berean Fellowship follow the passage below.
[1] But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.
[2] For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
[3] For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
[4] But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
[5] Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
[6] Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
[7] For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.
[8] But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.
[9] For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,
[10] Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.
[11] Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.
[12] And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;
[13] And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves.
[14] Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.
[15] See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.
[16] Rejoice evermore.
[17] Pray without ceasing.
[18] In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
[19] Quench not the Spirit.
[20] Despise not prophesyings.
[21] Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
[22] Abstain from all appearance of evil.
[23] And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
[24] Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.
[25] Brethren, pray for us.
[26] Greet all the brethren with an holy kiss.
[27] I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the holy brethren.
[28] The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
Times and Seasons
There were times and seasons that were being observed during the apostolic era but they are now in our past. There are yet times and seasons that we are experiencing and looking to in our future that are not yet here.
The Return of Jesus as King of kings and lord of lords
This is now in our past.
The New Testament writers wrote to their audiences that lived at that time and what they have written has been recorded for us. The Scriptures were not written to us, even though they are still for us. If we accept the timing that we are given for the year by the calendar that we are using today as being correct and accurate, as I am making this entry it is the year 2026, planting us about two millennia beyond the times of the apostles. I personally believe that our current timeline is inaccurate and probably 700 years about has been added to the calendar that we go by. I cannot prove this, but it is what I believe.
I also believe that the word soon means soon as well as other phrases like at hand mean the same thing. Jesus promised to return within one generation of the time that he was ministering in, before His crucifixion, burial and resurrection. Jesus being about 30 to 33 years old at the time of his crucifixion, burial, and resurrection, -- one generation would be somewhere around 70 A.D. I believe Jesus returned, judged the nation of Israel, as well as the world empire that was ruling at that time (Rome) and then established a physical kingdom on the earth similar to but not exactly like what the Jews of His day were anticipating.
Most followers of Jesus in our day would find alarm at what I've just stated and may cry out that my interpretation of eschatology is removing their hope. That is utterly ridiculous! Your hope is in Christ and your ultimate hope is that you are going to be someday resurrected, receiving a glorified body, and that you're going to be able to live in God's presence forever. Your hope is not bound into a singular event (called the rapture) that is being pressed especially in the last few couple of hundred years into the psyche of evangelical christians across the world.
If your hope is in that, I think it is a false hope, because it happened within 40 years of the resurrection of Jesus, according to the Scriptures. It does not matter to me what history books written by men may say, I believe the Scriptures.
Comfort and Edify One Another
We comfort one another with the truth of God's Word and we edify one another by encouraging each other to live a holy life and to be faithful witnesses of the gospel of Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord and King!
Acts 23:1-6
[1] And Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said, Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day.
[2] And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth.
[3] Then said Paul unto him, God shall smite thee, thou whited wall: for sittest thou to judge me after the law, and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law?
[4] And they that stood by said, Revilest thou God's high priest?
[5] Then said Paul, I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people.
[6] But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.
Titus 1:1-3
[1] Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;
[2] In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;
[3] But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;
Titus 2:11-14
[11] For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
[12] Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
[13] Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
[14] Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
Believers in Jesus Christ should live full of hope in this day even though what call Paul called the blessed hope is behind us. We still have great hope and expectation: we will live forever with God in His presence with Jesus Christ the Son of God in His presence, - because of God's mercy and grace in our lives!
Our King still reigns!
Jesus Christ was born king of the world or earth by Divine right. He was the King of the Jews but not only of the jews, He was the King of all kings and the Lord of all lords and He still is.
