October 9 Daily Discovery - Read Hebrews Chapter 5

[1] For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins:
[2] Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity.
[3] And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins.
[4] And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.
[5] So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.
[6] As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
[7] Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;
[8] Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
[9] And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
[10] Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.
[11] Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.
[12] For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
[13] For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
[14] But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
Jesus, our Great High Priest
In this chapter the writer introduces Christ as being a priest, indeed a high priest in the order of Melchizedek. The priesthood of the old covenant was the Aaronic priesthood and only the sons of Aaron could become priests. One of them would be chosen to fill the office of the high priest. The high priest was the priest that would enter into the holy of holies one day a year to offer the blood of sacrifices for his own sins as well as the sins of the people. The priesthood of the new covenant would be filled differently with a priest after the order of Melchizedek (someone having neither beginning nor ending) and of course only Jesus fits this description. He had no sin so He would not need to offer any blood for Himself. The blood that he offered before God was His own blood for the sins of the people that would be redeemed for all time both under the old covenant as well as the new covenant.
The old testament sacrifices, and in particular the day of atonement sacrifice only covered the people's sins, they never actually took people's sins away. Jesus was the Lamb of God that would take away the sins of the world, -- not simply cover them!

He is called the priest of the most high god and there is no genealogy recorded for him. He was also the king of Salem (Jerusalem).

He is the Son
John 3:16-18
[16] For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
[17] For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
[18] He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
He is the Prophet
Deut. 18:15
[15] The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;
He is the Priest
Heb. 7:12-17
[12] For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.
[13] For he of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, of which no man gave attendance at the altar.
[14] For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.
[15] And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest,
[16] Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.
[17] For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
He is the King

[2] Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
He is the Lamb

[29] The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
He is the Lord

[14] These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.
