October 13 Daily Discovery - Read Revelation Chapter 5
This passage below is from the King James Version (ekjv.org).
Remarks from the Berean Fellowship follow the passage below.
[1] And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.
[2] And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?
[3] And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon.
[4] And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon.
[5] And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.
[6] And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.
[7] And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne.
[8] And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.
[9] And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;
[10] And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
[11] And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands;
[12] Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.
[13] And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.
[14] And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever.
The Lion is the Lamb!
In his vision, John sees that the One that is seated on the throne in heaven is holding a book or a scroll in his hand, and it has seven seals. This was a book but it was not bound on a spine as books that we have on our shelves. When it came to the end of a chapter on a book there was a seal, and then the next chapter would start and then there was a seal; and as it was opened you could read the first section but then you would have to open another seal to read the next one.
A search was being made to try to find someone that was worthy to open the book but no one was found. No one was found in heaven, on earth or under the earth. No one was found anywhere that could even look on the book much less open it. This caused John deep-seated distress and he began to weep ... until someone told him that there was One that had prevailed that could open the book and loose the seven seals. This One was none other than our Lord Jesus Christ, who was the Lion of the tribe of Judah at the same time being the Lamb of God that would take away the sins of the world.
Old Covenant Shadows were Cast by New Covenant Realities
God's plan of redemption and restoration are revealed in both covenants, and therefore in both testaments. They were revealed in the Old Covenant as shadows. There were many examples and illustrations that would be borne out as a reality during the time of the New Covenant.
The Man - the Lion
The lion referred to an authority or a ruler or a king, or a sovereign. The prophecies of the old covenant pointed to a Messiah, a Christ, an Anointed One, that will fill this role. The lion represented a very special man that would come in the future.
The symbol for the tribe of Judah was a lion. The foremost example of a king for the nation of Israel was king David. He was from the tribe of Judah. H e was promised that one of his future descendants would rule the nation of Israel forever.
Old Testament prophets made shadowy references to this future king.
The Lord Jesus Christ is that Lion, the King of kings and Lord of lords!
The Man - the Lamb
The lamb referred to an innocent sacrifice for men's sins. All of the animal sacrifices that the children of israel had offered during the time of the first covenant were all shadows of the sunday perfect sacrifice of god's lamb.
There was a singular event that pointed so clearly to this; called the passover. On this day all the households of the children of Israel were commanded to sacrifice a lamb and take its blood and paint it on both sides of the door and above the door and as a result when God sent His angel to judge the kingdom of Egypt he would pass over their homes and their birth first born sons would not die. This was a great shadow as well.
Christ was actually crucified on the day of the passover for Israel.
John 1:29
The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
