October 23 Daily Discovery - Read 1 Kings Chapter 6

[1] And it came to pass in the four hundred and eightieth year after the children of Israel were come out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month Zif, which is the second month, that he began to build the house of the LORD.
[2] And the house which king Solomon built for the LORD, the length thereof was threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof twenty cubits, and the height thereof thirty cubits.
[3] And the porch before the temple of the house, twenty cubits was the length thereof, according to the breadth of the house; and ten cubits was the breadth thereof before the house.
[4] And for the house he made windows of narrow lights.
[5] And against the wall of the house he built chambers round about, against the walls of the house round about, both of the temple and of the oracle: and he made chambers round about:
[6] The nethermost chamber was five cubits broad, and the middle was six cubits broad, and the third was seven cubits broad: for without in the wall of the house he made narrowed rests round about, that the beams should not be fastened in the walls of the house.
[7] And the house, when it was in building, was built of stone made ready before it was brought thither: so that there was neither hammer nor axe nor any tool of iron heard in the house, while it was in building.
[8] The door for the middle chamber was in the right side of the house: and they went up with winding stairs into the middle chamber, and out of the middle into the third.
[9] So he built the house, and finished it; and covered the house with beams and boards of cedar.
[10] And then he built chambers against all the house, five cubits high: and they rested on the house with timber of cedar.
[11] And the word of the LORD came to Solomon, saying,
[12] Concerning this house which thou art in building, if thou wilt walk in my statutes, and execute my judgments, and keep all my commandments to walk in them; then will I perform my word with thee, which I spake unto David thy father:
[13] And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will not forsake my people Israel.
[14] So Solomon built the house, and finished it.
[15] And he built the walls of the house within with boards of cedar, both the floor of the house, and the walls of the cieling: and he covered them on the inside with wood, and covered the floor of the house with planks of fir.
[16] And he built twenty cubits on the sides of the house, both the floor and the walls with boards of cedar: he even built them for it within, even for the oracle, even for the most holy place.
[17] And the house, that is, the temple before it, was forty cubits long.
[18] And the cedar of the house within was carved with knops and open flowers: all was cedar; there was no stone seen.
[19] And the oracle he prepared in the house within, to set there the ark of the covenant of the LORD.
[20] And the oracle in the forepart was twenty cubits in length, and twenty cubits in breadth, and twenty cubits in the height thereof: and he overlaid it with pure gold; and so covered the altar which was of cedar.
[21] So Solomon overlaid the house within with pure gold: and he made a partition by the chains of gold before the oracle; and he overlaid it with gold.
[22] And the whole house he overlaid with gold, until he had finished all the house: also the whole altar that was by the oracle he overlaid with gold.
[23] And within the oracle he made two cherubims of olive tree, each ten cubits high.
[24] And five cubits was the one wing of the cherub, and five cubits the other wing of the cherub: from the uttermost part of the one wing unto the uttermost part of the other were ten cubits.
[25] And the other cherub was ten cubits: both the cherubims were of one measure and one size.
[26] The height of the one cherub was ten cubits, and so was it of the other cherub.
[27] And he set the cherubims within the inner house: and they stretched forth the wings of the cherubims, so that the wing of the one touched the one wall, and the wing of the other cherub touched the other wall; and their wings touched one another in the midst of the house.
[28] And he overlaid the cherubims with gold.
[29] And he carved all the walls of the house round about with carved figures of cherubims and palm trees and open flowers, within and without.
[30] And the floor of the house he overlaid with gold, within and without.
[31] And for the entering of the oracle he made doors of olive tree: the lintel and side posts were a fifth part of the wall.
[32] The two doors also were of olive tree; and he carved upon them carvings of cherubims and palm trees and open flowers, and overlaid them with gold, and spread gold upon the cherubims, and upon the palm trees.
[33] So also made he for the door of the temple posts of olive tree, a fourth part of the wall.
[34] And the two doors were of fir tree: the two leaves of the one door were folding, and the two leaves of the other door were folding.
[35] And he carved thereon cherubims and palm trees and open flowers: and covered them with gold fitted upon the carved work.
[36] And he built the inner court with three rows of hewed stone, and a row of cedar beams.
[37] In the fourth year was the foundation of the house of the LORD laid, in the month Zif:
[38] And in the eleventh year, in the month Bul, which is the eighth month, was the house finished throughout all the parts thereof, and according to all the fashion of it. So was he seven years in building it.

The Building of the House of the LORD

This chapter gives us details of how Solomon constructed the temple. The temple was the place of worship and the place in which the presence of God would be manifest. The first house of worship that the Israelites had was the tabernacle that Moses had built in the wilderness. It could be taken down and erected again because it was made to work as a temporary structure. Instead of outer walls of stone it had boards that were connected together that created a great fence around the inner part of the sanctuary which was a tent, which was made of cloth and skins of animals.

Both structures were Old Covenant shadows depicting a New Covenant reality. The dwelling place of God was going to be the hearts of men.

The temple and the tabernacle were both referred to as the house of God during the Old Covenant and the church is referred to as the house of God in the New Covenant.

Our Bodies are the Tent (the tabernacle)

They are temporary and transient. God dwells within them and He moves with them.

John 1:14

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

2 Cor. 5:1-2

[1] For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
[2] For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven:

Our Bodies are the Temple

Our body is the holy place in which God dwells. We must be careful not to defile it.

1 Cor. 6:19-20

[19] What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
[20] For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

Eph. 2:18-22

[18] For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.
[19] Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
[20] And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
[21] In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:
[22] In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

The Heavenly House

The New Jerusalem will be our eternal home as the residents of the kingdom of god and kingdom of heaven and the church which is his holy bride.

The Lord Jesus Christ, the King of kings and the Lamb of God will be smack dab in the center of everything!

The earthly Jerusalem was the unfaithful bride of the Old Covenant. The church would be the faithful bride without spot of the New Covenant. But there is also an eternal bride that will envelope both covenants and the church. This eternal bride is the New Jerusalem.

Heb. 11:8-10

[8] By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
[9] By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:
[10] For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

Heb. 13:14

For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.

Rev. 21:1-16

[1] And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
[2] And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
[3] And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
[4] And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
[5] And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
[6] And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
[7] He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.
[8] But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
[9] And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife.
[10] And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,
[11] Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal;
[12] And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:
[13] On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates.
[14] And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
[15] And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof.
[16] And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.
