September 29 Daily Discovery - Read Luke Chapter 5

This passage below is from the King James Version (ekjv.org).

Remarks from the Berean Fellowship follow the passage below.

[1] And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,
[2] And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.
[3] And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.
[4] Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.
[5] And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.
[6] And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.
[7] And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.
[8] When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.
[9] For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken:
[10] And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.
[11] And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.
[12] And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
[13] And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him.
[14] And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.
[15] But so much the more went there a fame abroad of him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities.
[16] And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.
[17] And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.
[18] And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him.
[19] And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus.
[20] And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.
[21] And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?
[22] But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts?
[23] Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk?
[24] But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house.
[25] And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God.
[26] And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day.
[27] And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me.
[28] And he left all, rose up, and followed him.
[29] And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them.
[30] But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?
[31] And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.
[32] I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
[33] And they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink?
[34] And he said unto them, Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them?
[35] But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.
[36] And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.
[37] And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish.
[38] But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.
[39] No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.

New Wine Requires New Bottles

Many of the common people of Israel loved Jesus Christ. Their rulers did not. In this chapter we see Jesus demonstrating His power through miracles and proclaiming that He could forgive sins; which is something only God can do. The scribes and pharisees and the sadducees: the leadership of the Jewish nation saw Jesus as a problem, not as a Savior.

God was not adding a new section to the Old Covenant for the Jews. It would not work. The New Covenant was going to need an entirely new container. It would not be a revision of the Old Covenant, it would be something absolutely, entirely different!

The Old Covenant had expired and it was fading away. The New Covenant was replacing it.

Jesus Proved and Declared He was the Messiah

As Jesus approaches the sea of Galilee there's a great crowd that has gathered and He has an opportunity to teach. H e sees a couple of idle fishing vessels in the water. O ne of them belongs to Peter and he borrows it to use as a teaching platform to the people that were on the coast. You could look at it as a thank you to Peter for the use of his vessel when Jesus told him to go out into the deep water and throw down his nets for a big catch. Jesus was not a professional fisherman;  peter was, they had already fished all night and had caught nothing and typically the deepest of waters in a large lake would not be the best place to catch fish anyway, but Peter said I'll still do what you tell me to. Peter followed Jesus' instruction and of course the net had enclosed so many fish it could not hold them all. Peter knew this was a miracle and he responded by worshiping Jesus.

The next scene that we see is a leper, a man that was full of leprosy, falling before Jesus in a town and crying out, "Lord, if You want to You can make me clean." Jesus says, "I want to" and He touched him and said, "Be clean." His leprosy was immediately gone.

Some time has passed before the next scene we are given. They are in some town and multitudes have come to be healed by Jesus. This time scribes and pharisees are present as well, being there to observe this Healer. Among these was a man that some friends had brought on a stretcher so Jesus could heal him but they couldn't get through the crowd to bring him in before Jesus inside of the house. So they opened up part of the roof and lowered him down using ropes where he would be before Jesus and Jesus looked at him and told him that his sins were forgiven.

That proclamation did not sit well with the scribes and pharisees and Jesus knew it.   He confronted  them and said, "Well, you need to know that I have the authority to forgive sins on earth. What's easier for me to say? -  your sins are forgiven or arise to take up your bed and walk?" He had already forgiven the man's sins and so He said "take up your bed and walk" and of course the man did.

The Messiah would be from everlasting

Micah 5:2

But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

The Messiah would be called "God with us"

Isa. 7:14

Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.  (Immanuel or Emmanuel means "God with us".)

The Messiah Rejected by His People

 John 1:10-11

[10] He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
[11] He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

Luke 5:39

No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.

The common people in Israel received Jesus well. Their leaders did not.

They all failed to properly interpret the prophecies concerning their messiah because they were expecting a kingdom like the other kingdoms of the earth and that is what not what jesus came to do. The common people were looking for someone that would deliver them from Rome ruling over them. However, their leaders liked things just like they were and they didn't want Jesus to mess it up for them. They loved Rome. They had gained for themselves many advantages with their relationship with Rome, which God considered a whoredom.

Unfaithful israel at this time is the great harlot of Revelation that would be riding the beast which would be the final world empire -- which was Rome. The beast ended up hating the whore and destroyed her. The nation that they had ridden turned on them. God would destroy israel for their rejection of his Son and he would use Rome to do it.

Jesus was going to be going away into a far country to be made King and he was going to return.

Luke 19:10-28

[10] For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
[11] And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear.
[12] He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.
[13] And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.
[14] But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.
[15] And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.
[16] Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds.
[17] And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.
[18] And the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds.
[19] And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities.
[20] And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin:
[21] For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow.
[22] And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow:
[23] Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury?
[24] And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds.
[25] (And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds.)
[26] For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him.
[27] But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.
[28] And when he had thus spoken, he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem.
