Does this Portion of Scripture Contain any Warnings that I Should Heed?
29 Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
30 they that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.
31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.
32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
33 Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.
34 Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.
35 They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
I have bolded and highlighted several statements of note above.
This passage contains an obvious warning about the results of drunkeness.
Though not in this passage, if you see the word "beware" you should look for a warning that you need to heed.
- It does start with this question: "Who hath woe ..." When you see the word woe, look for a warning.
I do not believe that the Scriptures absolutely forbid consuming drinks containing alcohol as a beverage, but drinking in order to become drunk is forbidden. Furthermore, excessive drinking to the point where the control of your faculties have been yielded to the drink is forbidden.
The control of our faculties are to be yielded to God alone.
A Warning About Addiction
Alcohol is a drug and consuming it can easily become an addiction. A drunken person can lose such control of his faculties that he can say and do things that he cannot remember.
He could be abused badly and wake up wondering how it happened.
